Tackling the Workforce Challenge

  • Mrs O's Cafe Lincoln University Lincoln New Zealand (map)

The primary industries are the backbone of New Zealand’s economy, yet they face an ever-growing challenge—securing a skilled and sustainable workforce. Labour shortages, shifting demographics, and evolving industry demands are putting pressure on businesses to find innovative ways to attract, train, and retain workers.

Building and maintaining a skilled workforce is crucial for the future of the primary industries, but it remains an uphill battle. As New Zealand navigates tightening immigration policies, changing worker expectations, and technological advancements reshaping traditional roles, businesses must adapt to remain competitive. Without action, labour shortages will continue to threaten productivity, innovation, and the long-term viability of many farming operations. However, with fresh thinking, policy shifts, and industry collaboration, there is an opportunity to reshape the workforce for a more resilient future.

Federated Farmers has long been at the forefront of advocacy and support for New Zealand’s rural communities, championing policies that strengthen the primary sector. Representing thousands of farmers and agribusinesses nationwide, they tackle pressing industry challenges—from labour shortages to regulatory changes and economic pressures. With deep expertise and on-the-ground experience, they offer valuable insights into how workforce issues impact not only farmers and food producers but also the broader agricultural supply chain.

We welcome guest speaker Wayne Langford from Federated Farmers, who will share firsthand perspectives on the struggles and solutions shaping rural employment, examine the key barriers to workforce sustainability and explore practical steps to ensure the primary sector thrives in the years ahead.

Join us for this vital discussion as we unpack challenges, explore opportunities, and reimagine the future of employment in agriculture, horticulture, and beyond.
