Meet our Speaker

Dr Gavin Ross, Plant & Food Research Group General Manager Marketing & Innovation

Dr Gavin Ross has a deep understanding of innovation for the Horticulture Industries.  He began his career as a research scientist studying the molecular biology of fruit ripening.  In 1988, after a PhD at the Queen’s University of Belfast, he joined HortResearch (now Plant & Food Research) as a research scientist and in the late 1990s was central to the establishment of genomics research for major horticultural crops, now integral to the Institute’s scientific programmes.  After several years with Genesis R&D Corporation, in 2005 Gavin was appointed as HortResearch’s first Vice President Business Development in the USA.  Here he was responsible for building the Institute’s US business and liaising with US-based clients and collaborators.  In 2010, Gavin returned to New Zealand and for eight years was the General Manager Business Development with responsibility for the Institute’s global business operations.  In 2018 Gavin joined the Institute’s Senior Management Team as Group General Manager, Marketing and Innovation.  In this role he has overall responsibility for the organisation’s commercial activity, including interactions with customers, business model innovation, Intellectual property protection and commercialisation and International business.

During his career, Gavin has established an international reputation in plant molecular biology and fruit science, and has a strong network of science and industry contacts.  In July 2012 Gavin joined the Board of NZBIO, the New Zealand Industry organisation for Biotechnology industries, and was its Chair from 2015 until 2017.  Gavin is a Director of several ventures and subsidiaries of Plant & Food Research.
