The Intersection between Science into Policy

  • B.linc Workshop Lincoln University Campus New Zealand (map)

Dr John Roche has been the Chief Science Adviser at the Ministry for Primary Industries for 6 years, prior to which he was Principal Scientist for Animal Science at DairyNZ. An accomplished applied scientist, with an H-index >60 and >15,000 citations, before joining the public service, Dr Roche had little understanding of how science-based evidence is used in setting policy and how scientists can be most effective in ensuring evidence is appropriately used in policy settings.

Scientists should be interested in policy because their expertise is crucial for informed decision-making that addresses complex societal challenges. By engaging with policy, scientists ensure that regulations and laws are grounded in accurate, up-to-date knowledge, leading to more effective and sustainable solutions for societal issues. Additionally, their involvement in policy-making processes can enhance public trust in science, fostering a more scientifically literate society.

Over his tenure as Chief Science Adviser, Dr Roche has learned how scientists can best engage with policy and ensure they have an influence on the society in which they live. He will try and impart some of the lessons learned in a presentation followed by a chance to answer any questions you might have.
