This session will explore the potential scenarios and implications of a changing climate, what it could mean for food production in Aotearoa New Zealand, what the future of brand New Zealand could look like as we respond, lead and adapt to these changes and remain a key food basket and innovator leading the world to capture the opportunities.

Our agri-food industries are faced with the challenge of how to produce high-value food sustainably, whilst adapting and building resilience to a changing climate. Reducing emissions, finding the best use for land, protecting our water, animal and social welfare and improving biodiversity are all pieces in this very complex demanding puzzle which will be explored in this session. Meet the Speakers
Sarah Perriam, MC
Sarah Perriam has a passion for sharing the stories of New Zealand’s premium food & beverage producers environmental, animal welfare and global trade business practices are often mis-understood by the public.
Sarah previously co-hosted ‘Rural Exchange’ on Magic Talk and her Friday ‘rural’ segment with Duncan Garner on the AM Show as a platform to regularly talk about the big issues in agri-business. She is now working on new media endeavours in the agri-food space, including the launch of her new podcast – naked.hungry sober – targeted at curious consumers and passion producers.
In 2018, she hosted the 50th FMG Young Farmer of the Year live-broadcast on Newshub.co.nz and was nominated as a finalist in the Westpac Women of Influence.
She has recently been involved as a speaker & MC at many events around New Zealand, including the 2019 Boma Grow Summit, bringing professional pre-production management and time-management at the event with her years as a producer and event manager.
Sarah hopes that with a public trend towards more critical thinking and thought lead journalism the primary sector is on the right track to changing the perception of farmers to passionate food producers.
Susan Kilsby, Agriculture Economist, ANZ
Susan rejoined ANZ Bank in the Agriculture Economist role in October 2018, having previously been employed by ANZ in a graduate role earlier in her career.
Susan was previously at NZX where she headed up a team of agriculture analysts providing market intelligence to many leading global dairy businesses by way of regular reports, news and online tools. While at NZX she was involved with launching the dairy derivatives market, including the milk price future and options products. Susan worked alongside Massey University to develop a milk price calculator and a milk production predictor tool. Susan has authored several reports on New Zealand and China’s dairy industry and has presented regularly at local and international conferences.
Susan studied Agricultural Economics at Massey University. She was raised on a dairy farm in Toko but now lives with her partner and two children on a small sheep and beef farm in Martinborough.
Dr Robyn Dynes, Science Impact Leader Farm Systems & Envionment, AgResearch
Dr Robyn Dynes is a Science Impact Leader and farm systems scientist with AgResearch based at Lincoln. Her current research interests across pastoral sectors and focused on understanding the opportunities for farm management and new technologies to contribute to a lower emissions future. Robyn leads the Next Generation Systems programme within the National Sciecne Challenge Our Land & Water…. In this programme, scientists are partnering with agribusinesses which are investing in land use transformation.
Ross Milne, LeaftFoods General Manager
Ross is the General Manager of Leaft Foods and is responsible for developing the compelling and competitive leaf protein-based solution to address the challenges that New Zealand’s food and fibre sector are facing. Ross brought together knowledge from New Zealand’s research institutes, Universities and world-leading experts to ensure Leaft Foods was successful from concept through to delivery.
Ross has a B.E(Hons) in Chemical and Process Engineering from the University of Canterbury and has an extensive career in project management, most recently in the role of Head of Special Execution Group – EMEA & Global for GEA Process Engineering in Denmark. Ross’ professional career has been focused on high-level responsibility for the execution of projects, setting strategy, financial reporting and managing large teams of people.
Allen Lim, Owner, Jade Garden
Allen and his wife owns Jade Garden Produce and are also the majority shareholders in Island Horticulture. The former is a 110 hectare outdoor market garden in the Selwyn District and the latter is South Island’s largest cucumber growing operation situated in North Canterbury. The two companies have a combined staff of around 35 full time equivalent.
Allen is a Mechanical Engineer by profession and has worked in the automotive assembly industry for a number of years before been drawn back to the land some 17 years ago. He is currently a board member of Vegetable New Zealand Inc., Canterbury Horticulture Growers Society Inc, NZGAP, and is a community member of Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee where he was chair for 4 of the 5 years. He is also Chair of HortNZ’s Brassica Crop Advisory Group.
Last year, he was appointed to the Freshwater Leaders Group. This is a central government advisory group tasked with identifying emerging and future freshwater management issues, opportunities and challenges for the Minister for the Environment to consider.
Seth Laurenson, Acting Science Impact Leader for Soil & Water, AgResearch
Seth Laurenson is a senior scientist and Science Impact Leader for Soil and Water at AgResearch. Seth has a background in soil and water dynamics, particularly as it relates to irrigation and water movement in soils. He gained his PhD in soil science from University of South Australia, where he investigated the impact of saline irrigation use in vineyards around Adelaide’s peri-urban fringe. At AgResearch Seth’s work has focused on the physical health of soils under pastoral grazing systems and how farmers can mitigate against contaminant losses from critical source areas and vulnerable landscapes.
